The CFBL community is excited to announce the launch of the Irish Music Project, a new initiative aimed at creating a school ensemble based on traditional Irish music. The ensemble will include a variety of instruments commonly found in Irish folk music, such as violins, flutes, whistles, guitars, banjos, and more.
How It Works: Informal Jams and Self-Directed Learning
This project will take a relaxed, informal approach to music-making. There will be no formal rehearsals; instead, students will meet during the monthly Lunch Jams to participate in the Irish Music Project session at the end of each jam. This structure allows students to practice and prepare independently, learning the tunes in their own time.
To help with this, Mr. Carpenter has made recorders and whistles available for students to borrow. These instruments will be especially useful for those who want to teach themselves the basics of traditional Irish music. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the tunes and then join the monthly session to play together as part of the ensemble.
The First Tune: 'Out on the Ocean'
The first tune the group will be learning is a lively jig called "Out on the Ocean". This popular Irish tune is a great starting point for both beginners and more experienced musicians. Mr. Carpenter has provided written copies of the tune, both in standard notation and with a guitar chord accompaniment, allowing students to choose how they want to learn the piece. They can either learn it by ear, using their listening skills, or follow the written music – or even combine both methods.
Why Join the Irish Music Project?
The Irish Music Project offers an exciting opportunity for students to explore traditional Irish music, develop their musical skills, and collaborate with their peers. It’s a fun and flexible way to engage with music, whether you’re new to an instrument or a seasoned player. Plus, it’s a great way to be part of a supportive and creative group where everyone can contribute to the music-making process.
So, if you're interested in learning traditional Irish tunes and joining a welcoming and musical community, the Irish Music Project is the perfect opportunity for you! Grab an instrument, learn the tunes, and join us for the next Lunch Jam!
