On 14 and 15 May, a delegation of CFBL students had the honour of taking part in the Mathematics Congress of the AEFE, which was held at the Lycée Français Jean Monnet (LFJM) in Brussels. The event was part of Math Week, which aims to promote a passion for mathematics through varied and engaging activities.
On Tuesday 14 May, the students discovered the Belgian capital in a fun way with a virtual treasure hunt, then had a choice between an orienteering race or lectures. The afternoon was devoted to the heats of the mental arithmetic competition. Pupils had the opportunity to test and improve their rapid calculation skills, an exercise that was both fun and educational. The day ended with 'Math Night', which offered cultural and fun activities based around mathematics from 5 to 8pm. Students were able to take part in photo competitions, escape games, programming challenges and much more. The evening was also an opportunity for them to give presentations and watch mathematical films.
On Wednesday 15 May, the Math Champion competition was held, with champions from AEFE zone schools from Years 6 to 11. There were 5 mental arithmetic questions on paper, followed by 15 speed questions with buzzers, putting on an impressive show of speed and mathematical precision. Our students shone particularly brightly: Céleste (Year 7) and Gaspard (Year 8) reached the final, and Timoteo (Year 9) was crowned Year 9 Champion.
By taking part in this congress, the CFBL students had a unique experience, combining learning, competition and cultural discovery. Well done to them for their mathematical talent, and thank you to their teachers!
