From 16 to 19 April, our Year 6 students went to Normandy for a journey through history. Over the course of four days, they explored key sites related to World War II, enriching their understanding of this pivotal period.
Their first stop was the Caen Memorial, a museum dedicated to peace and reconciliation. Here, the students delved into the causes and consequences of World War II through interactive exhibits, films, and artifacts. They learned about the impact of the war on civilians and soldiers alike, gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of peace.
Next, they visited the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during the war. Walking among the rows of white crosses, the students paid their respects to the soldiers who gave their lives for freedom.
At Omaha Beach itself, the students learned about the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day. Standing on the same shores where history was made, they imagined the bravery and determination of the soldiers who stormed the beaches under heavy fire.
The Arromanches 360° Cinema offered a unique perspective on the D-Day landings. Through immersive film footage projected on a circular screen, the students felt as though they were witnessing the events unfold in real time.
In Bayeux, the students marveled at the Bayeux Tapestry, a medieval masterpiece depicting the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Although not directly related to World War II, the tapestry provided valuable insight into historical storytelling and the passage of time.
Amidst these educational experiences, there was also time for fun and relaxation. The students enjoyed a beach activity, playing games on the sandy shores. In the evenings, they danced during a disco party, letting loose and celebrating their friendships.
One of the highlights of the trip was Climb Up Caen, an adventure park with high ropes courses and zip lines. The students challenged themselves to overcome obstacles and conquer their fears, all while enjoying panoramic views of the city below.
As the trip came to a close, the students reflected on everything they had seen and learned. They returned home with a deeper understanding of World War II and its impact on the world, as well as wonderful memories of fun times with their friends.
