A Journey Back in Time to Discover Medieval Women

On January 27, February 6, and February 12, the students from the three Year 8 classes had the opportunity to explore the Medieval Women exhibition at the British Library—a captivating immersion into the history of women in the Middle Ages.

The goal of this cultural outing was to highlight the essential role of women between the 12th and 15th centuries, a contribution often underestimated or forgotten. Accompanied by two passionate guides, the students took part in an interactive workshop that helped them gain a deeper understanding of the many facets of women’s lives during that era.

The speakers enthusiastically explained how medieval women influenced Western society, particularly in economic, political, artistic, and religious fields. Through the analysis of ancient manuscripts, historical documents, and precious artifacts, the students discovered prominent female figures: influential queens, scholars, nuns, but also women of the people—traders and artisans—who helped shape the medieval world.

The workshop included moments of discussion, where students were able to ask questions and reflect on the parallels between women’s rights in the past and today. This dialogue helped deepen their understanding of how the role of women has evolved throughout history and encouraged them to take a more critical look at the inequalities that still exist in contemporary society.

This educational outing is part of a broader initiative to promote cultural and historical awareness, aiming to enrich the students’ knowledge while developing their analytical and reflective skills on issues of equality and diversity.

A Memorable Experience
Beyond its educational value, this day will remain a significant memory for the students. Between discovery, wonder, and learning, each of them left with a deeper understanding of medieval history and the vital importance of female figures in our shared heritage.
