Guest Speaker: Chris Rolland FRSA’s Unforgettable and Inspiring Talk on Space

As part of our STEAM Week, we kicked off with an unforgettable and inspiring talk on space by Chris Rolland FRSA. Space is a complex and challenging topic to explore, but Chris made it accessible and engaging for everyone. He began by introducing the contributions of great figures in astronomy, including Galileo, Messier, Hubble, and Kranz, before diving into the principles of mission operations.

One of the most engaging discussions was about the Apollo 13 mission and Gene Kranz’s leadership during the crisis. Chris emphasized Kranz’s famous belief that “Failure is not an option” and how this mindset played a crucial role in the mission’s survival. He linked it to the importance of perseverance, problem-solving, and determination—not just in space exploration, but in all aspects of life.

Chris also took us on a journey through the history, ethics, morals, and values that shape humankind’s exploration of space. A highlight of the talk was using a smart telescope to capture an image of the Sun—an exciting hands-on experience for our students. Even more incredible was the opportunity to touch and hold a real rock from space, a meteorite found in the West African desert.

This unforgettable experience encouraged our students to reflect on the vastness of the universe and the incredible achievements of humankind. Their curiosity and engagement were evident during the impressive Q&A session. One of the most memorable questions came from a CM2 student, who asked whether we should continue researching other planets—a mature and thought-provoking inquiry about our moral and ethical responsibilities in space exploration.

To conclude, Chris left our students with an inspiring message: to think deeply, strive to be their best, and remember that the only barriers to achieving their dreams are the ones they set themselves. He shared his own experience of being disabled and neurodiverse, living with autism, yet never letting it stop him from pursuing his passion for astronomy.

A huge thank you to Chris Rolland FRSA for such an unforgettable and inspiring talk!
