5ème pupils are currently looking at global poverty and inequality in their Geography class. This seems especially relevant this year as the Covid-19 crisis has had such a profound effect on so many families, triggering a rise in unemployment, soaring food poverty and a resulting surge in demand for food banks.
Given the extraordinary situation this year, pupils have been exploring ways in which CFBL might be able to help in the local area, especially since the 5e curriculum in Citizenship includes identifying some form of humanitarian action to help make pupils more engaged citizens.
Just a few minutes walk away from CFBL, the Queen’s Crescent Community Association(QCCA.org.uk) has been providing food parcels since April to local people in need, with 21,000 delivered to date. With the latest lockdown, QCCA’s support and assistance is needed now more than ever. In turn, of course, QCCA depends on voluntary donations to enable it to provide these food parcels to families and to the elderly or vulnerable members of the community.
We encourage as many 5e students as possible as well as staff members to make a donation of non-perishable items, we know it would be much appreciated not just by QCCA but, more importantly, by all the people that they support. Given that the holiday season is coming up, there is a particular wish for festive and sweet items such as:
Biscuits, mince pies and cakes (with 2 week+ shelf lives)
Snacks: cereal bars, chocolate bars, sweets, crisps
Festive chocolate boxes (e.g. Ferrero Rocher, Quality Street, Celebrations)
Additionally, other essential items such as toiletries (shampoo, shower gel, nappies, hand wash, baby wipes) are always in high demand too.
Collection day will be Wednesday 9th December morning.
We hope that through this little gesture of solidarity, we can offer some festive cheer to those struggling the most at this difficult time.
